Upper Elementary Classroom Assistant (4th Grade - 6th Grade)

Regular, On-going Tasks  

Daily  

Pre-, during and Post-class  

• Carry out plans and directives of Guide. 
• Help keep classroom and bathroom neat during and after sessions. 
• Take charge of snacks and refilling supplies as needed. 

During Class  

• Greet and dismiss children, help with dressing and undressing. 
• Assist any children with a problem in organizing materials, completing tasks and returning materials properly. 
• Contend with interruptions, thereby freeing trained staff to continue working with children and/or observing. 
• Take charge of classroom when Guide is out of the room. 

Post-class – in cooperation with Guide

• Make minor material repairs. 
• Refresh environment. 
• If necessary, program and assemble a new exercise for the next day. 
• Confer with Directress 
• Compare observations. 
• Discuss relevant points in Montessori theory. 
• Demonstrate a learning material. 
• Exchange ideas or alternate way to cope with a given child (not just problems). 
• Review successful group activities and invent new ones. 

Occasional, On-going Tasks  

• Attend all staff meetings and other in-service training as requested. 
• Attend school functions as requested. 
• Other duties as requested 

Physical – On the job at least 80% of the time, the employee must:  

• Bend 
• Squat 
• Stand 
• Sit on the floor 
• Walk one mile, unassisted 
• Push/pull 
• Carry/lift up to 50lbs
