Job Description

Position Overview:

The EV Battery Cell Discharge Operator is responsible for safely and effectively performing controlled discharging of electric vehicle (EV) battery cells that are damaged, out-of-spec, returned, or nonconforming. This role supports the safe handling and neutralization of lithium-ion cells prior to transport, disposal, or recycling, thereby reducing the potential for thermal runaway or hazardous incidents. Operators must execute discharging procedures precisely, monitor all variables, and maintain compliance with environmental and workplace safety regulations.

This position requires strong attention to detail, technical awareness, and a commitment to safety. Operators will collaborate closely with safety, quality, and engineering teams to uphold operational standards and prevent risks associated with high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cell Discharge Operation and Monitoring

Operate designated discharge equipment (e.g., resistive load banks, water bath discharge tanks, automated discharge lines).

Accurately identify and classify battery cells designated for discharge according to SOPs and QA input.

Monitor electrical parameters (voltage, current, temperature) during the discharge process using digital instruments and data acquisition systems.

Ensure cells are fully discharged to target thresholds (typically below 1V) before removal or transfer.

Handle and move battery cells using appropriate lifting tools and containment devices.

2. Safety, Risk Prevention, and Emergency Response

Follow strict safety procedures, including full PPE compliance (flame-resistant clothing, safety gloves, face shields, etc.).

Remain alert to hazards such as cell swelling, overheating, fire, smoke, electrolyte leakage, and arc flash.

Immediately report abnormal cell behavior or safety concerns to supervision or EHS team.

Follow containment, suppression, and evacuation protocols in the event of a thermal event.

Maintain familiarity with emergency response protocols, eyewash station use, and spill kits.

Participate in ERT (Emergency Response Team) drills and fire hazard mitigation exercises as assigned.

3. Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

Properly segregate, store, and label discharged cells in accordance with EPA, DOT, RCRA, and facility-specific hazardous waste requirements.

Support the facility’s compliance with lithium-ion battery waste regulations.

Prevent contamination or cross-exposure by following clean zone and dirty zone segregation procedures.

Assist in the preparation of materials for safe off-site disposal or recycling in conjunction with third-party contractors.

4. Documentation and Traceability

Maintain accurate and detailed logs for every discharge operation including:

Cell ID/batch numbers

Initial and final voltage

Operator ID

Time/date stamps

Equipment used

Complete inspection checklists, discharge validation forms, and digital records (e.g., MES or SAP systems).

Support audits and inspections by ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and accessible.

5. Equipment Use and Maintenance

Perform daily checks on discharge stations to verify grounding, calibration, connection integrity, and temperature controls.

Ensure that discharge units, safety enclosures, and containment systems are free from defects or residues.

Promptly report any equipment malfunction to the maintenance or engineering team.

Participate in routine preventive maintenance schedules and minor corrective actions.

6. Continuous Improvement and Team Collaboration

Participate in root cause investigations of cell quality issues or safety events.

Suggest improvements to discharge methods, safety protocols, or workflow layout.

Work in collaboration with Quality Assurance, Process Engineering, and EHS to optimize procedures.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Ability to read and understand safety labels, equipment manuals, and technical instructions.

Strong attention to detail and high safety awareness.

Basic understanding of electrical safety, voltage/amperage, and battery handling.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in EV battery manufacturing, hazardous materials handling, or electronics recycling.

Forklift certification or powered industrial truck experience.

Familiarity with lithium-ion battery chemistries and associated hazards.

Completed training in NFPA 70E (electrical safety) or HAZWOPER (hazardous waste operations).

Bilingual in English/Korean or English/Spanish (if applicable to workforce demographics).

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Must be able to regularly stand, walk, sit, talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms to include stoop, kneel, bend or crawl.

Work is performed in an industrial battery processing environment.

Frequent exposure to high noise, radiant heat, airborne particles, and chemical odors.

Must be physically able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods (8–12 hours).

Lift up to 50 lbs safely using proper ergonomic techniques.

Wear full PPE including respirators, face shields, and FR suits.

May be assigned to night shift or rotating schedule, including weekends and holidays.

Work in proximity to battery cell storage areas and designated hazardous zones.

Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, quick decision-making, as well as solid teamwork skills. This candidate needs to have the ability to effectively and professionally communicate with all levels of individuals both inside and outside of the organization.
